Are the Props really necessary?

To the question "are they really necessary" the answer is no, they are not. But the truth is that even not being really necessary they can help the student tremendously with their practice, helping to create space in areas of the body and promoting impressions on the organic body that work as references for the evolution of the understanding of each asana. They also allow students who have not yet been able to do certain postures because of lack of experience or becasuse of health issues to be able to do it. A few sentences about the subject of some of the most important Iyengar teachers: "I was concerned with trying various ways to improve and refine my own practice. I used to pick up stones and bricks from the roads and use them as "supports" and "weights" to progress in my domain of asana..." B.K.S.Iyengar "Props allow us to unfold the space of an asana and familiarize ourselves with certain postures that would hardly be practicable. They create the understanding of the correct gesture (mudra) and attitude (bhava), thus allowing penetrating deeper into unexplored body regions." Christian Pisano
